Aqua4Life combines WATSU with other massage therapy techniques for a unique bodywork experience that aims to restore well being and balance to the four interrelated elements of the human body: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.

Watsu is the world's first form of Aquatic Bodywork offered in a pool heated to near body temperature. The therapeutic effects of bodywork are multiplied by the low-gravity, three-dimensional movement, and the warm, full-body embrace of water.

Watsu, which literally means Water+Shiatsu, was developed by Harold Dull who brought Zen-Shiatsu, from his studies with Master Masunaga, into the medium of water. Shiatsu is a Japanese massage technique based on the framework of traditional Chinese medicine that includes massage with fingers, thumbs, feet and palms; assisted stretching; and joint manipulation. Without the need for a futon to support the receiver, Harold found imaginative ways to support and stretch the body while still being able to administer acupressure.

Many years have passed since the early 80's when Harold Dull first started in the warm waters of Harbin Hot Springs, CA. In the interim, many other gifted Physicians, Physical Therapists, and Massage Therapists from around the world have added to this new take on bodywork we call Watsu.

Who is Watsu for?

Watsu is an extremely beneficial self-care practice, improving all of the functions of the autonomic nervous system, with therapeutic application for acute injuries and chronic pain. Along with deep stress-relief comes improved concentration and mood and relief from migraines and anxiety. Watsu soothes the whole system, promoting the body’s natural capacity to heal.

Pregnant Women>

Watsu during pregnancy is a refuge. As if in the womb herself, the mother feels warm, secure, and serene, which creates the ideal environment for nurturing the connection between mother and baby, as well as strengthening trust and acceptance of the journey ahead. Recipients comment the lightness and sense of emotional and physical release, along with numerous other benefits, including relief of back, shoulder and neck pain, and relief of muscle spasms and sciatica. It has also been used for helping with breech position and labor induction.

Watsu aids in achieving performance goals while protecting the body from injury. Benefits to athletes include shortened muscle recovery time after training, increased joint mobility and flexibility, improved concentration and mental clarity, and a positive outlook towards performance. Watsu is used by high-level sports therapists, including those serving Olympic teams in Europe.

Watsu gently balances the nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. After a session, seniors often experience a renewed ease and joy in living and an increase in self-esteem. Quality of sleep improves, and the body’s natural healing mechanism gets a jump-start, decreasing pain and inflammation and increasing joint mobility. Seniors report a feeling of lightness in body and ease in breathing, as well as improved digestion.

Watsu offers valuable experiences for children in the calming power of their breath and bodily relaxation, clearing and aiding the function of their autonomic nervous system. Parents have shared Watsu with their children to address concerns about behavior, impulse control, sensory imbalances, mood, and anxiety, as well as physical disabilities. Benefits include: improved sleep, reduced hyperactivity, and increased ability to focus attention, all of which positively impact social skills and self-esteem.

Watsu offers an exceptionally comforting and safe environment for newborns and infants who can truly experience free movement in the water, and relax deeply. Sessions with infants also provide an opportunity for bonding with their caregivers, who gain confidence and trust. Parents report reduced anxiety, improved movement, alleviated symptoms of colic, and improved sleep.

“Victor creates a beautiful, nurturing experience. I felt so free in the water! This is like nothing else in Portland. I’ve been waiting for this. Thank you so much, Victor. (Aqua4Life) makes a great monthly ritual.” – Emily, LMT (Oregon)

“I came to see Victor nearly 40 weeks pregnant and went into labor 6 hours after our session! He is very kind, professional, and intuitive. For an hour I felt like a baby in utero fully supported and cared for, guided in meditation without words. Highly recommended!” – MaryJane, LMT (Oregon)

“I received an Aquatic Bodywork session two days past my (estimated) due date. I had painful contractions every ten minutes. I entered into the warm water and the discomfort of the contractions stopped. I weighed nothing, my belly weighed nothing, and we rocked. With my eyes closed, looking into myself and connecting with my baby, we moved through the water, held by Victor. It was quiet, there was peace, there was introspection. I felt like my baby was no longer inside of me, as if the two of us were cuddling and dancing a relaxed and tender aquatic dance. Victor’s presence was subtle. I felt the presence in his hands but he was totally silent, respecting my intimacy and that of my baby, allowing us our own unique experience…I was planning a hospital birth, but my second child was born two days later in a beautiful vaginal birth at home. I did not tear and I had no problems with my previous cesarean birth. I was relaxed, calm, secure, and deeply peaceful, just as I was when I emerged from the session.” – Esperanza (Spain)“I experienced a weightless sensation that I hadn’t experienced in any other therapy. You lose the notion of the body and it is easy to let yourself go, entering into a state of complete relaxation. When you leave the water, you feel your whole body vibrate, and then a sensation of balance takes over, that everything is in place.” – Marina, LMT (Spain)

“The (Aqua4Life) session with Victor has certainly been one of the most special moments of my pregnancy…I felt like I was freed from the physical body and all was peace…I swam with my baby with the sweetest and most peaceful practitioner. Victor accompanied us toward a vibrant light that I perceived as the culmination of a beautiful stage…it helped me connect with my baby as well as her father, finding the three of us in an indescribable moment of pure love and joy, far beyond the material world. I would love to repeat the experience. Dearest Victor, thank you for this wonderful gift!” – Janis (Spain)

“Thank you so much Victor for helping me remember what it is to surrender to the water-dance, to openly receive and be safely and lovingly be held in that space. My heart is full, joyful and so grateful for your work” – Monica, (Oregon)
